Smouse Opportunity School
Originally commissioned in 1931 and designed for students with special needs, the Smouse Opportunity School was the first school in Iowa to create a conducive learning environment for those students unable to attend public school due to physical or mental disabilities. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, when Smouse needed to update their HVAC system they required that it not only improve the overall comfort and learning environment to suit Smouse’s diverse student body, but it also would maintain the unique and historic architectural details.
